Chapter 284 Scared Now?
The heavy rain lasted all night, making the roads wet and sl*ppery. The higher the terrain, the more difficult it was to navigate.
Daniel, having injured his leg and suffered from a high fever all night, was clearly struggling after walking a distance.
Looking at him, I asked worriedly, “Are you okay?”
He shook his head slightly, but his face turned even paler. Seeing him like this, I was afraid that he would collapse from exhaustion if we continued. I reached out to support him, and he didn’t refuse. He looked at me and said softly, “Thank you!”
I shook my head, a mix of guilt and worry knotting in my chest, and couldn’t help but say, “I’m sorry.” A pang of heartache surged within me, realizing that if it weren’t for me, he, a wealthy man accustomed to luxury, wouldn’t have had to come to such a place and face such danger.
He slightly raised his eyebrows and laughed, saying, “Why apologize? It was me who wanted to follow you. If I can’t keep up later, just don’t leave me behind.”
Hearing his words, I couldn’t help but frown, saying, “What are you talking about, how could I leave you behind?” Given the circumstances, if I abandoned him, would I still be human?
He gave a faint smile, his dark eyes seemingly filled with profound meaning. I didn’t have the energy to delve into it. Supporting him, I walked while observing our surroundings. In the past, I thought ‘over mountains and through valleys’ was just an adjective. Now, being in the actual scene, I realized the insignificance of mankind.
Not knowing how long they had walked, there were no longer any signs of mudslides around them. However, all they could see were thick, robust forests. The trees were tall, and all they could see when they looked up was the grey sky obscured by the dense forest. Under the tree roots were intertwined vines.
In front of me, there was no road anymore, only muddy clay and tangled vines and vegetation.
I realized too late, glancing sideways at Daniel beside me, his face was frighteningly pale, his forehead already covered in sweat. After walking this far, he was practically leaning on me for support.
Realizing that something was wrong with him, my heart sank, my voice hoarse as I asked, “Mr. Monroe, are you alright?”
Hearing my voice, he slightly lifted his eyes, weakly saying, “It’s okay, let’s keep going.”
Saying this, he forced himself to stand up and leave.
Suddenly, the huge b*dy fell directly to one side. In an instant, I tightly hugged his waist. The man was tall and even though I used all my strength, I still couldn’t steady him. Instead, I fell to the ground with him.
Afraid that he would fall and hurt himself, I padded the floor. Unknowingly, I bumped into something with my waist, the pain was so.. intense that it brought tears to my eyes.
Daniel’s face was pale, his handsome face still covered in sweat. Looking at me, his brows were slightly furrowed. He propped himself up, leaning to one side, and looked up at the sky.
I crawled up from the ground to ch*ck on him, only to find him with his eyes closed, his breath extremely weak. Due to the fall, his expensive custom-made clothes were already covered in dirt.
“Mr. Monroe,” I began, my voice involuntarily trembling as I reached up to touch his forehead, the temperature alarmingly high.
Perhaps sensing my movement, he slightly opened his eyes and looked at me, repeating the same words, “It’s okay.”
I was almost in tears. What time was it already, and he still said it was nothing.
Wiping the sweat off his face, I looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings, suddenly realizing that without a map or compa*s, even the phone that was buried in our haste to escape the cave, we had nothing. How were we to navigate these endless mountains?
Looking at Daniel struggling, I felt panicked, “Mr. Monroe, we might… have gotten lost.”
Daniel didn’t move, his eyes closed, not knowing if he was asleep, or…
I instinctively reached out to sense his breath, my heart uncontrollably sinking. But just as my fingers barely touched his nostrils, he suddenly grabbed my hand, and I unexpectedly met his deep, dark eyes.
Our eyes met, I let out a sigh of relief, disregarding any decorum, “You scared me to death.”
He looked at me, his thin l*ps curling up slightly, “What? Thought I was dead?”
I was annoyed. “What time is it, and he’s still in the mood for jokes,” I thought. Looking at him, I said, “We’re surrounded by mountains, how are we supposed to get out?”
He looked at me, his gaze deep, seemingly unconcerned with the endless forest around us. He simply asked, “Are you scared?”
I pursed my l*ps, not in the mood to joke with him.
