Chapter 237 Thick–skinned
“Gianna,” began a voice with a hint of enthusiasm. “I heard you’re now in charge of the Empyrean Group and have become its CEO. That’s impressive! Your uncle’s company recently laid off many employees, leaving him jobless. Do you think he could find a position at the Empyrean Group?”
Gianna didn’t respond.
Ruby, unabashed, continued, “Your uncle used to be just a team leader. But in my opinion, if he joined the Empyrean Group, he could even become its CEO.”
Maya, who was standing nearby, frowned upon hearing this.
Seeing Maya’s reaction, Gianna said, “What are you even talking about? He’s from the Rivera family, and the Rivera Group is such a massive conglomerate. Finding a job there shouldn’t be a challenge. Our operation is much smaller. We can’t accommodate such a significant figure.” Gianna’s words were direct and unyielding.
Ruby’s face darkened in an instant. Gianna had just hit a nerve. If they could have easily found a position within the Rivera Group, why would Ruby have felt so stifled?
The underlying cause was her family’s inability to make an impression, especially with Levi holding them in such low regard.
However, hearing Gianna say this out loud made Ruby’s humiliation evident.
She retorted angrily, “Gianna, what’s with the attitude? All I asked was for a job placement. No wonder Levi dumped you.”
“Ruby!” Maya interjected sternly, reprimanding her on the spot.
She realized she had indulged her youngest daughter too much.
“Shut your mouth and stop causing a scene, she warned.”
Ruby replied resentfully, “Mom, I was just asking her for a small favor. Aren’t we all family?”
“How can you be so shameless?”
Ruby, stung by Maya’s words, huffed and walked away dejectedly.
Seeing this, Maya quickly apologized, “Gianna, please don’t mind her words.”
Gianna shook her head, dismissing the incident. “It’s okay, Maya.”
She likened Ruby’s remarks to a dog barking, not worth her attention.
“Maya, I brought you a gift. I wish you boundless happiness and a long life,” Gianna said as she presented a gift box. However, Levi stepped forward and took the gift before Maya could.
“What did you bring? Let me see,” he said and promptly opened it to reveal an exquisite pearl necklace of high value.
“Gianna, your taste has certainly improved over time,” Levi complimented.
Yet, Gianna remained unfazed. “Indeed, it’s a bit better than before,” she said, her words carrying a subtle double meaning.
Levi caught the underlying message.
Maya quickly intervened, “Gianna, your presence alone is a gift. You didn’t have to bring something so valuable.”
“Maya, it’s the least I can do. You’ve taken care of me over the past three years. Now that I’m doing well, you can rest easy,” Gianna assured her.

Maya nodded and grasped Gianna’s hand.
“I’m glad to hear that.”
Elsewhere, Ruby was fuming. The audacity of Gianna, now in a position of power, to deny her, a senior member of the family, in front of everyone was unbearable.
Yet, given Gianna’s newfound status, Ruby felt helpless, left to stew in her anger.
“Ruby…” Rebecca approached, seemingly out of nowhere.
Ruby snapped, her tone irritable. “Why are you following me? I need some space.”
Rebecca, however, turned to look at Gianna, who was now the center of attention in the hall. It was strange, considering how, in the past, Gianna had little to no standing in Rivera Manor. Not one member of the Rivera family had ever truly regarded Gianna, let alone accepted her as Levi’s wife.
