“I… I don’t know,” the girl stammered nervously.
“You don’t know?” Pearl frowned and glanced at her, warning, “This is your last chance. Don’t miss it!”
The girl trembled all over with her face turning pale. “A… A stranger asked me to do this. She said the herb would cause diarrhea, and the filming could be delayed. I didn’t expect it to be poisonous…”
Pearl chuckled and asked softly, “How much did she pay you?”
“1,400 dollars in cash.”
‘Only 1,400 dollars? Jenny is really stingy!’ Pearl thought. Raising an eyebrow, she bent down and looked at the girl. “What’s your name?”
The girl hesitated for a moment and then answered honestly, “My name is Helen.”
Pearl nodded knowingly but shook her head after that. “I’ve called the police. You’d better turn yourself in. Maybe you can get a lighter sentence.”
Hearing that, Helen collapsed, crying loudly.
However, Pearl wasn’t in the mood to listen to her wailing. She dialed Richard’s number.
“What’s the matter?” Richard’s voice was cold and distant.
“Could you please tell Jenny that if she continues to do anything that affects my interests, I won’t let her off?” Pearl’s voice was icy, even more ruthless than Richard’s.
Richard sensed something wrong in her tone, and his usual calm voice finally had a hint of disturbance. “What has she done now?”
“What has she done? She knows very well herself what she’s done. Remember to pass on the message.” Pearl’s laugh was colder than the winter chill.
Richard was silent for a moment, then said, “I’m sorry. I’ll compensate for the losses she caused.”
“Richard, you’re not her father. Why should you be responsible for what she did?” Pearl was disappointed.
Richard remained silent, but Pearl could feel a heavier atmosphere on his end. “Fine. If you want to protect her, go ahead.”
After saying that, Pearl hung up and called Wayne.
“Wayne, I need you to ch*ck Jenny’s recent transaction records or the transaction records of people around her. If you come across a figure of 1,400 dollars with a transaction partner named Helen, make a special note of that.”
“Pearl, did that woman find someone to hurt you again?” Wayne recalled the person they had encountered, and he was furious.
“Yeah, she’s quite something.” Pearl tightened her grip on her phone.
“Don’t get upset. I’ll make her pay!” Wayne smirked and hung up before Pearl could respond.
Wayne was efficient. After a while, Jenny showed up on her own accord.
Pearl was resting on the couch at the set when Jenny barged in without a word and tried to slap her.
But the anticipated pain didn’t come because Pearl managed to grab her hand. As soon as she flung her hand away, Jenny fell backward due to inertia.
“Pearl Leighton!” Jenny was furious and shouted, “What have you done? Why are you trying to hurt me?!”
Pearl was surprised and asked, “What do you
mean?”
“Stop playing dumb! Why are you spreading rumors online, tarnishing my innocence?”
