Chapter 76 Why
The art exhibition concluded at three in the afternoon.
Vera glanced at the familiar car parked outside the International Exhibition Center.
She quickly opened the pa*senger door and got in the car. “Eric… when did you arrive? Why didn’t you call me? If you had informed me of your arrival, I would have come out earlier so you wouldn’t have had to wait so long.
Gavin had a copy of her schedule, so Eric knew she had an off-campus activity today to visit an art exhibition.
Eric had just gotten off the plane and happened to be pa*sing by, so he came to pick her up on his way back.
Eric replied, “It’s alright.”
Vera asked. “Eric, how did your negotiation go?”
“The contract has been signed.”
“Congratulations! Eric, you’ve been working hard on this project for over a week, and now you can finally take a good rest.”
The car started moving, and a voice reminded, “Vera, fasten your seatbelt.”
Vera paused for a moment, then obediently said, “Ah, I forgot.”
She quickly fastened her seatbelt. In the past, he was always the one who helped her with it.
Observing his exhaustion, Vera sat quietly without saying a word.
Eric made a U-turn with his car, just in time to see someone crossing the road. “Isn’t that a familiar figure, Eileen?”
She bent over, tidying up the clothes and scarf of the man seated in the wheelchair. Her waist-length hair, slightly curled, fell over her shoulders. She unscrewed the cap of a mineral water bottle and helped him take a sip.
Eric’s gaze was sharp as a blade as he observed her every move. His thin, cold l*ps pursed, and his strong features suddenly took on a chilling air.
An unusual atmosphere descended in the car, and it was clear Eric was displeased.
Vera also noticed Eileen and said, “The school organized a trip to the art exhibition today,

and Eileen came with her friend. But his leg… It seems he has a disability.”
Eric looked at Eileen, who was standing not far away, and suddenly felt a little dazed.
For some inexplicable reason, he felt that Eileen had once treated him the same way with meticulous gentleness and consideration, just like a virtuous wife.
Thinking of that dream, Eric suddenly felt suffocated.
The traffic light across the street turned green, and Eileen pushed the man in the wheelchair across the road.
“I can only join you for lunch. In the evening, I have to attend my dance cla*s at the training
center…”

His legs were still in the recovery phase, so he couldn’t eat anything too spicy. Thus, Eileen found a restaurant that served good stew.
Eileen also preferred lighter flavors, a taste preference they both shared.
After the meal, Eileen headed to Skyline Building.
Her lesson only ended at half past eight in the evening.
Eileen stepped out of the building. At this hour, it was hard to hail a cab, so she would need to walk a distance.
The streetlight shone down on her, casting a long shadow behind her.
The sound of footsteps gradually grew closer and closer.
A bad feeling rose in Eileen as she knew she was being followed.
Eileen didn’t dare to look back. There was not a soul outside now. The damp, cold wind. seeped in through her collar, making her quicken her pace.
The person trailing behind her was closing in, running to catch up with her.
Eileen ducked into an alley.
A masked figure approached her, hands tucked into their pockets while their eyes revealed at chilling intent to kill.

Eileen fearfully glanced back again.
“Go on, then! Run! I’d like to see where you can run to now”
Eileen pressed herself against the wall in fear. “No… Don’t come any closer!”
In the darkness, a powerful high beam pierced into the alley. The blinding light made Eileen squint her eyes, shielding them with her hand. She couldn’t make out who was sitting in the
car
“Miss, if you must blame someone, blame yourself for offending others. Don’t hold today’s events against us!”
“Shaggy, why waste words on her? Finish this woman off quickly so we can finish work early”
“Behave and don’t resist, or you might find my knife slipping.”
Eileen’s fingernails dug deeply into the wall, her gaze fearless as she stared directly into the intense light.
Perhaps it was because she had adapted, or maybe it was because of the voice in her head. telling her that the person sitting in the car could very well be Eric.
“Did he hire these people? Why? Is he making a move so early because I’ve already begun my revenge?”
In their past life, they had at least made it to the point of marriage.
Yet, now… Eric had no intention of letting her live.
“Could it be that he’s also behind that incident back in Peach Fishing Village?
“If it is him, why would he still help me teach a lesson to those who bullied me?”
“Who is he putting on an act for now?”
“So, is he here today to watch me be humiliated before I die?”
“If that’s the case, why didn’t he just let me die in the sea last time? Why did he rescue me?”
“Eric, what on earth did Will do to you!”
“Why are you taking out all the hatred you have toward him on me?”
“I didn’t even do anything!”
The men’s hands began relentlessly tearing at Eileen’s clothes.

Her Blake fur coat had already been taken off.
To them, Eileen’s resistance was nothing more than the helpless struggles of a kitten.
The two men began to shower her neck with k*sses.
“Tsk, two grown men here engaging in voyeurism… Eric, don’t you have any reaction?”
Zachary’s gaze fell on Eric’s lower b*dy before a sleazy smile spread across his face. His l*ps. seemed to be smeared with a layer of blood-red, making him look incredibly seductive.
“What a pity… After tonight, this young girl will become a woman! But you did well. If Eileen had managed to latch onto the Smith family, our plan would only have become more difficult to execute. Women like her are a dime a dozen. There’s no need to find it a pity
Eric’s eyes were as black as obsidian, as dark as the night itself.
But things didn’t go as they had expected.
With a powerful shove, Eileen managed to push the men away. One of them drew a dagger, prepared to use it as a threat. However, she swatted it aside with her hand. The dagger fell to the ground, but in the process, her arm was sliced open.
Blood gushed out, and clutching her arm, Eileen fled into the darkness.
The two men pursued her. Before long, they received a phone call.
“No need to chase her.”
Eileen didn’t know how long she had been running. It was only when she looked back in panic and saw no one pursuing her that she stopped.
A moment later, she accidentally tripped and fell in the middle of the road.
A deep cut appeared on her forearm, and blood continued to flow from between her fingers, covering her entire hand.
The pain was already numbing her.
Eileen’s mind was filled with tension, her b*dy trembling as she attempted to rise from the ground.
However, her knees were so weak that she had no strength at all.
Just then, the phone in her pocket began to ring.
Eileen took out her phone and glanced at the incoming caller ID that appeared.

The phone sl*pped from her trembling hand and fell to the ground.
She hesitated, not daring to answer the call.
But the phone continued to ring, again and again.
In the end, Eileen still answered the call, though she remained silent.
Perhaps, he is watching me from somewhere nearby and laughing at how disheveled I am.
From the other end of the phone came Eric’s deep, emotionless voice. “Does it hurt?”
Upon hearing his voice, Eileen felt as if her heart had shattered into pieces.
It’s really him!
Eileen stared at the empty street, her eyelashes trembling as tears streamed down her cheeks.
“Why?”
Why… Eric, why would you do this to me?
