Chapter 40 Joining Her on the Bed
Curtis rushed over the minute he got wind of Barry’s news.
Sabrina looked troubled as she told him, “I suddenly get why you said Ada probably isn’t as great as she seems.”
In their previous discussions about Ada, Sabrina had always been non-committedly doubtful about her. But now that Barry was in trouble, she suspected things weren’t that simple.
“How’s Barry holding up?”
“He’s in rough shape. And I’m really curious about who Ada’s ex-boyfriend is. Whoever he is, he’s gone to great lengths. Ada said that he’s a person of influence,” Sabrina responded.
Just thinking about it was enough to set Sabrina’s head spinning. Without catching this guy, Barry was basically out of options.
Curtis felt helpless. He had the means to help her, but revealing his identity was off-limits. He looked at Barry, then called Victor to transfer him to Haven & Kent Hospital.
Upon hearing this, Sabrina’s heart skipped a beat.
“No need,” she quickly said, “You’ve already gone through a lot of trouble for my grandfather. My brother will manage.”
“Are you planning to look after both of them in separate hospitals, or do you have some sort of cloning ability?” Curtis said, not mincing his words.
Sabrina knew very well that it would be easier to care for them if they were in the same hospital. But that was exactly why she felt awkward about it. Haven & Kent was expensive, and her grandfather was already a financial burden on both Curtis and Victor.
“Don’t worry about it. Victor can afford it,” c
rea*sured.
His words did little to ease Sabrina’s conscience. “It’s Victor’s money, not mine,” she muttered.
Ignoring Sabrina’s objections, Curtis took charge and swiftly arranged Barry’s transfer.
Later that day, Sabrina met Annie Leonhardt, a nurturing middle-aged caregiver recommended by Sharon. Following a short chat, Sabrina asked Annie if she could extend her caregiving services to Barry as well.
After settling on the cost, Sabrina and C
finally headed home.
Once there, Sabrina popped next door to ch*ck on Ada before going back to her place.
Daniel had already caught wind of Barry’s plight and was visibly on edge, anxiously awaiting their return.” Is Barry okay? I was worried sick when I heard.”
“Don’t worry, he’s doing better than it seems,” Sabrina a*sured.
Relieved, Daniel let out a sigh. “By the way, I saw a suspicious person visiting Ada today. Keep an eye out, maybe even ask her about it.”
Though puzzled as to why Ada’s visitors would be a concern, Sabrina noted Daniel’s heightened sense of caution. She decided she would inquire the next day.
Just this morning, Curtis had been told he could join her on the bed. Yet as evening fell, Sabrina sat tensely on the bed like a coiled spring after her evening shower.
This was the first time she had been this close to a man.
Surprisingly, she had maintained a distance during her relationship with Aaron. But tonight was her own proposition. And though she felt a knot of fear, a flicker of anticipation tingled within her. What exactly was she looking forward to? She could not quite put her finger on it.
To alleviate her tension, Sabrina busied herself with anything to take her mind off the awkwardness. Meanwhile, Curtis had been engrossed in last-minute work in his study since they got back. Even Daniel seemed to have accepted that his grandson wouldn’t change that habit.
Close to midnight, Curtis returned to the bedroom and instantly noticed Sabrina engrossed in her phone. She met his gaze briefly before diving back into her digital world, barely concealing her unease. It left Curtis puzzled.
“Aren’t you supposed to be resting? Don’t you have to see your grandpa at the hospital tomorrow?” Curtis probed.
Usually, by this time, Sabrina would be asleep. But tonight, she defied her routine and allowed herself to be consumed by her phone.
His words only intensified the tension gripping her. “I know,” she replied, her voice wobbling. “I’ll go to bed soon. You should get some rest too.”
Setting her phone aside, she cocooned herself within her blanket.
Watching all of this unfold, something clicked in Curtis. ‘Didn’t Sabrina date Aaron for two years before this? Did they not get intimate? Why is she being so anxious?”
Questions swirled in his mind, but he said nothing. After showering, he found Sabrina still awake, engrossed in her phone.
‘What could be so engaging on that tiny screen?’ he mused.
As Curtis sank into bed, Sabrina felt the mattress give way beside her. His presence was like a charge in the air, and she gulped. She was certain that nothing would happen, but that did not prevent her from feeling a sense of dread and nervousness. Every slight move he made resonated through her.
Without warning, he shifted, and her b*dy instinctively tensed. However, he simply settled into a new position and did nothing more.
Realizing she had been overthinking, Sabrina closed her eyes and wrapped herself up in her blanket.
Curtis was in a deep slumber when a sudden weight on his ch*st woke him. He opened his eyes to find Sabrina’s leg draped over his and her hand resting on his chest. This was why he had felt so constrained.
Carefully lifting her leg and hand away, he rolled over and tried to reclaim sleep. But her arm found its way back, defying his quest for rest.
Finally, just before the first light of dawn, Sabrina rolled away, allowing Curtis the respite to drift into sleep. However, it lasted less than three hours before his internal clock jolted him awake. Opening his eyes, he found Sabrina waking up at the same instant.
