I didn’t see William, I just walked straight towards the direction of the parking lot.
As I pa*sed by Rachel, she grabbed my sleeve.
I frowned, stopped, my tone not particularly pleasant, and asked, “What is it?”
She pursed her l*ps, her complexion not quite right, perhaps due to pregnancy. Looking at me, her voice was somewhat hoarse, “I heard you went to the border, when did you come back?”
“I haven’t been back long,” I began, my voice somewhat stiff.
She pursed her l*ps, gently caressing her belly, “I’m pregnant, the child is William’s. He’s currently discussing divorce with Emma. Before long, we should be getting married. Will you come?”
I pulled away the hand she had clutching my sleeve, looked at her, and let out a cold laugh. Mockingly, I said, “Breaking up someone else’s family, becoming the other woman, Rachel, does that make you proud? You may have no shame, but I do. How could you ever think I would attend such a wedding?”
Perhaps my words were too hurtful. Her face turned pale, she looked at me with furrowed brows and said, “Tabatha! Enough is enough. I invited you because I considered you a friend. I don’t care if you don’t
come.”

with a cold laugh, “I’m just striving for my own happiness. But you, I heard Walter is going to marry someone new. That woman seems to have recognized Auntie Eileen as her godmother. Your mother, your husband, they’ve all been taken away. Tabatha, is this the face you want? We’re friends, so I’m kindly reminding you, that Marjorie is not as easy to deal with as Ashley.”
“Thank you for that.” I distanced myself from her, looking at her
coldly, and said, “Let’s not talk about being friends anymore, Rachel. We haven’t been friends for a long time. And let me give you a piece of advice, don’t be too arrogant. What you’ve worked so hard to get might just end up being a pipe dream in the end.”
She didn’t care, she scoffed and walked towards William.
People always end up parting ways, for better or for worse, that’s just how it ends up.

Back in the car, after waiting for a while, Hermosa followed and got in. The little girl’s face was flushed, looking as if she was holding back anger. I started the car and said, “I’ll take you back to the old house.”
She nodded, silent, and after a while, she finally spoke, “Auntie, are all adults so fickle?”
I was stumped by her question, unable to respond for a moment. Leaning on the steering wheel, I thought for a while before saying, “Perhaps, when you grow up, you might understand.”
She hugged her arms, twisting her head to look at the flashing scenery outside the car window, and muttered, “Adults teach children to learn well, to behave, to follow rules, to be good people, but adults themselves are untrustworthy and act recklessly.”
Her words left me speechless.

Yes, when we were young, everyone told us to be good children, to grow up to be good people, but no one told us what the world would be like when we grew up, no one told us that people’s hearts are fickle, and it’s hard to distinguish between good and evil.
I couldn’t counsel her, I couldn’t even counsel myself, how could I counsel a child?

I parked the car outside the old house and let Hermosa get out, watching her as I said, “I won’t walk you in, you can go in by yourself.”

“Hermosa.” Olivia came out of the old house, calling Hermosa from afar. Hearing her voice, Hermosa turned around to look at her and called out, “Auntie.”
Seeing me, Olivia was somewhat surprised, then excitedly came up to me and said, “Tabatha, long time no see, are you okay?”
I nodded, seeing that she was still radiant, her eyes still as beautiful as crescent moons when she smiled. It was good to see, not everyone had changed, at least, she was still the same as before.
“Let’s go, come in, the house is very lively today, and Walter is here too.” She reached out to pull me towards the old house, but I quickly held her hand and smiled lightly, “I’m here to drop off Hermosa, I won’t go in.”

The hustle and bustle here, was no longer related to me.

“Uncle Er,” Hermosa’s voice interrupted Olivia’s words.
I was taken aback for a moment, lifting my gaze to see a handsome man emerging from the yard. It was Walter.
Our eyes met, his complexion was much better than the last time I saw him. Presumably, his upcoming wedding was putting him in a good mood.
“Walter, you’re just in time, Tabatha is here, call her to join us.” Olivia spoke, continuing, “Carley has invited a famous troupe from the capital, I heard they’re quite renowned, let’s go see them together.”
