She nodded, her gaze steady on me as she asked, “Tabatha, did the doctor say when I could be discharged?”
I hesitated for a moment, then said, “The doctor said, as long as the pain is gone, I can be discharged from the hospital and go home to recuperate. It’s like confinement, I just need to avoid catching a cold, moving too much, or getting tired.”
After she hummed in agreement, she began a long silence.
I accompanied her, just sitting there quietly.
In the afternoon, I returned to the hotel and ran into Rachel in the lobby. She was sitting in the lounge area, wearing delicate makeup and a cool, strappy maxi dress. She looked beautiful, so beautiful that it made me feel unfamiliar.
Seeing me, she rose and walked towards me, her expression a mix of guilt and fear, “Tabatha, how is she?”
The “she” she referred to was Emma,
I pursed my l*ps, unconsciously stepping back a bit, creating some distance between us, maintaining the normal distance for strangers conversing. I ignored her hurt expression, and said, “The child is gone, but the adult is fine.”
Upon hearing the news, she pursed her l*ps slightly and breathed a sigh of relief, saying, “It’s good that nothing’s wrong.”
Looking at her, I couldn’t tell if I was disappointed or numb.

Unwilling to talk to her any more, I was ready to leave.
She blocked my way, looking at me with furrowed brows, “Tabatha, about last night, William and I were both drunk. I don’t know why we woke up in a hotel, and I have no idea why Emma showed up in our room this morning. Believe me, I never intended to hurt her.
