Chapter 288 I Waited for You
I added some firewood, taking advantage of the light rain, I collected a lot of dry wood nearby and piled it next to Daniel. I broke branches and placed them around Daniel to block the wind, fearing heavy rain, I also gathered a lot of stones nearby. Fortunately, the place I chose was a semi-open cave. Although it was different from the cave that could completely block the wind and rain last night, as long as I used some branches and stones to a*sist, it could also shelter from wind and rain.
Having sorted everything out, I went to see Daniel. He was still sweating profusely from his forehead, due to the fire in front of him, causing his damp clothes to give off some steam.
“Mr. Monroe.” I called out to him. He was shaking terribly, barely opening his eyes to look at me, his voice hoarse, “What’s wrong?”
Seeing him like this, I couldn’t help but feel even more guilty, asking, “Are you okay?”
He looked at me, seemingly distracted by the fire burning in front of him for a few seconds before he asked, “Did you start it?”
I nodded, reaching out to touch his forehead. It was still very hot.
He gave a wry smile, “I didn’t expect you to have such a skill.”
Seeing that he still had the energy to joke with me, I breathed a sigh of relief and said, “We might not be able to get out of here for a while. You wait here for me, I’ll go look around nearby to see if there’s any food or water source.”
He looked at me, his dark pupils somehow deepened a bit, looking like a mix of confusion and caution. I really didn’t know why he suddenly
showed this kind of expression, and asked puzzledly, “What’s wrong?”
He paused, shaking his head slightly. “It’s okay, you go ahead, I’ll wait for you here.”
I nodded, added more firewood to the fire, looked around, and then turned to leave.
She hadn’t gone far when she heard Daniel’s deep voice, “Tabatha.”
I stopped in my tracks, turned around to look at him, and saw him watching me with a distant smile. His voice was hoarse as he said, “I’ll wait for you to come back.”
I was stunned, somehow, the scene at that moment was so familiar, so familiar that I felt I had once experienced the exact same conversation.
Five years ago, after Ezra and I fell off a cliff, he injured his leg and I hurt my abdomen. Since it was a primitive forest, I, who originally wished him dead, had no choice but to huddle with him for warmth in the deserted forest.
He had grown up in the mountains along the border since he was a child, understanding how to survive in the forest. However, because he had injured his leg and couldn’t walk, he was directing me on how to survive and how to get out of the forest with him.
I remember the day I parted with Ezra, a similar scene seemed to have occurred. I went out to find something to eat, he called me from a distance, telling me, “Tabatha, go quickly and come back soon.”
That time, I didn’t go back. While searching for food, I was bitten by a snake. Fortunately, I encountered border patrol personnel who were patrolling the mountains. Hearing me speak fluent Chinese, they took me down the mountain and saved me.
That day, when I woke up, I had already been sent to a small border
town of my homeland. Knowing that I had returned to the embrace of my homeland, I never mentioned to anyone about the evil villain in the mountains, nor did I mention that when I fell off the cliff, I dragged someone down with me.
During that period, I never mentioned it to anyone. In my heart, I wished that Ezra had died directly in the mountains. His flesh and blood were only worthy of paying tribute to the ancient trees in the forest.
But I had never imagined that he would reappear five years later, intact. But luckily, he was still dead, died on that blown-up yacht, merged with the sea.
Looking at a face completely different from Ezra’s not far away, no, a completely different person, I pulled back my thoughts, looking at Daniel’s faint smile, “Alright, wait for me, I’ll be back soon.”
He nodded, just watching me from a distance, his gaze deep and distant.
Living off the land and water, this has been pa*sed down from
generation to generation. I have to thank Ezra for teaching me those survival skills in the wild. I know what I can eat and what I can’t in the mountains, how to find a water source, and how to make simple water collection tools.
When I came out, I made marks along the way, so when I returned, I was very fast.
When I returned, Daniel was still quietly leaning against the fire, his gaze somewhat vacant. He wasn’t asleep, which surprised me. Seeing me, he was taken aback, then stared at me intently, his voice hoarse, “You’re back.”
I nodded, my mood significantly improved due to the decent haul.
Holding up my findings, I said, “Look, I’ve found food and drink, and
even some pain relief and anti-inflammatory medicine.”
