Chapter 16 My Heart Is Already Dead
Coleen was surprised that the man she had once rejected actually believed in her. She really appreciated it. “It’s not because of Lyndon.” Coleen took a deep breath to keep her composure. “Then why? Do you really hate me that much? If you were still the privileged Ms. Hurst, and I were still that poor boy, would you still not even spare me a glance?” Coleen closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, the tears in her eyes had disappeared. “I don’t want to answer a hypothetical question. Mr. Lynch, my heart is already dead. I can’t give you the happiness you want. I don’t know what you’ve been through in these five years, but I’m very clear about what I’ve been through. You’re right. I fell from the moon into hell. However, just like I didn’t pull you up when I was high above, I won’t drag you down into my hell now. I don’t know what it will take for you to give up, but I can tell you that I’m not the right person for you. I carry so much baggage that I can’t afford a romantic relationship.” Looking at her resolute expression, Chad grasped her wrist. “You won’t change your mind no matter what I say, right?” “Yeah, that’s right,” Coleen replied briefly. “Maybe I should resort to dirty tactics to force you to be with me.” Chad loved Coleen deeply. His initial motivation to succeed was to make himself strong enough to outshine Lyndon. Now, with Lyndon out of the game, Chad was more determined to win Coleen over. Coleen frowned silently. She had been as clear as possible, but Chad didn’t seem to understand. They stood at an impa*se. He wouldn’t give up, and she wouldn’t budge. Donna trotted over from the hallway, looking panicked. Coleen stopped her and asked, “What’s wrong?” “A lady has fainted in the VIP section. I’m on my way to get a doctor.” Upon hearing that, Coleen turned and ran in that direction, with Chad following after a brief hesitation. The section was crowded with people. Coleen squeezed through the crowd and was shocked to find that the lady was Aislin. Coleen knelt by Aislin’s side. “Aislin! Aislin, wake up!” “Ms. Hurst, do you know her?” Leslie asked in bewilderment. “How long has she been unconscious?” “About a minute and a half. Where is her companion?” “She came alone and registered for membership today.” “Check her room,” Coleen instructed, looking worried. Soon, Leslie returned with two staff members. “Ms. Hurst, we found this on the floor of her private room.” Coleen’s heart skipped when she saw that thing. “Call an ambulance. Hurry, call an ambulance.” Coleen knew that thing better than anyone else did. It was sleeping pills. For five years, she had relied on them to sleep through about half of her nights. What Coleen didn’t understand was why Aislin had come here to take half a bottle of sleeping pills. The security personnel came to carry Aislin outside. Coleen pulled out her phone and dialed Lyndon’s number, her hand shaking. She stood by the wall, biting her l*p anxiously. “Pick it up, Lyndon. Come on. Pick it up.” Coleen dialed the number twice, but Lyndon didn’t pick up. On Coleen’s third attempt, Chad snatched her phone away. “Enough, Coleen. Do you have any self-respect left?”
