Emelie politely greeted, “Mrs. Middleton, are you alone?”
Vanessa took her hand, looked at her carefully, and reprimanded, “Emelie, it’s been over a month since you last came home for a meal. Why do you look thinner again?”
Emelie apologized. “A lot of things have been going on recently.”
Vanessa’s face turned sour.
“Ah, but even if you had come during this time, we might not have been able to entertain you properly.”
“What happened?” Emelie asked.
“It’s all because of William and his father.” Vanessa shook her head.
“The relationship between them has deteriorated to the extreme because of that secretary named
Daphne.
“William hasn’t come home during this time, and he hasn’t answered any calls or messages.”
It wasn’t unusual for William not to come home, considering he hadn’t been back for six months last time.
But not responding to calls and messages was indeed a first.
One can see how bad the relationship between father and son has become from this incident.
Emelie glanced at Vanessa discreetly.
She likely knew that one reason for the strained relationship between William and his father was Vanessa.
However, in her opinion, Vanessa, as a stepmother, had been relatively modest in all aspects.
She heard that Vanessa got an intrauterine device implanted after marrying Henry, showing her sincerity in not wanting children and not competing with William for power, money, or status.
“I really can’t understand; what’s so good about that secretary?
“Why does he like her so much? Clearly, you’re much better than her, Emelie,” Vanessa continued to
complain.
None of these remarks were appropriate for Emelie to respond to, so she simply listened silently.
Vanessa sighed again. “For the father–son relationship to deteriorate to this extent, what will happen in
the future?
“If that secretary had either a good family background or capability, Henry wouldn’t be so opposed to
them.
“But since William likes her so much, we’ll just have to accept it if there’s no other way.”
Vanessa was more of the soft–hearted type among strict parents.

But from this perspective, as long as William kept his distance from the family for a while, Henry would eventually relent for the sake of the family line and business and allow Daphne back into the picture.
It wasn’t entirely impossible for Daphne to enter the Middleton family.
Vanessa realized it wasn’t appropriate to discuss William’s affairs with other von with Emelie.
Thinking that it might upset her, she quickly changed the subject.
“At Troy’s birthday banquet last time, Henry wasn’t really trying to matchmake you and Troy. He was trying to stimulate William.
“When he intervened, it showed that he still cares about you,” Vanessa said.
Emelie didn’t think William’s attitude at the time was him “intervening.”
“Since it’s the weekend today, why don’t you just come home with me for dinner? We can call William over, and you can help reconcile father and son,” Vanessa suggested.
Emelie quietly withdrew her hand and said softly, “Mrs. Middleton, you might not know, but I’ve actually resigned from Cloudex Corporation.”
Vanessa was taken aback. “You’ve resigned from Cloudex Corporation? Why?”
She immediately made the connection. “Is it because of that Daphne?”
“Actually, there’s no other reason for my resignation. It’s just that my contract expired, and I happened to want a change of work environment, so I didn’t renew it,” Emelie explained.
Vanessa didn’t believe her. She was frustrated, feeling like Emelle had been wronged.
She scolded, “You always endure grievances silently. It’s because of your soft nature that William bullies
you!”
Feeling extremely low, Vanessa added, “No matter what difficulties you encounter in the future, don’t
hesitate to come to me.
“We appreciate how well you’ve treated both me and Henry over these years.”
Emelie politely agreed, and Vanessa left without further shopping.
As Emelie picked out some suitable nutritional supplements for her mother, she noticed that the area displayed calcium supplements for middle–aged and elderly people as well as baby formula.
