“Why shouldn’t I? She kept her promise and calls me every day,” Athena shrugged, pleased by the look in Alpha Nick’s eyes. It was a strange look, but Athena could only hope it was for the best.
Alpha Nick’s curiosity increased. “Which number does she use? Her line doesn’t go through.”
Athena was happy to learn that he had tried reaching Sheila after the divorce, only to get blocked. “She must have blocked your number, and trust me, only a selected few.like me can reach her. Even if you get a new number, you still won’t reach her.”
It was just a fabrication to pique Alpha Nick’s interest, as Athena was not sure of it, but the look in Alpha Nick’s eyes was priceless. Seeing Athena all smiles and not answering the phone, he began to doubt that Sheila was the one calling.
“You are just playing pranks on me.”
Athena smiled evilly. “Let me do you a small favor. I will put the phone on speaker.” She did as said before asking,
“Hello dear, how are you today?”
Sheila’s voice from the end of the line was full of excitement. “I’m very well, ma’am. I might not be able to call you tomorrow because I will be very busy. How is your health? Are you taking good care of yourself? I got some gifts for you and will have them delivered…”
Athena pressed the speaker button again, denying Alpha Nick the opportunity of hearing more. Somehow, he couldn’t stand it and snatched the phone from her.
“Hey, I command you to return my phone.” Athena tried to get her phone back from her son, but Alpha Nick held it above her head as he was taller.
“I just want to have a word with her,” he said politely, speaking into the handset without pressing the speaker button. He didn’t want anyone to hear their exchanges.
“Sheila, why did you block my number? How have I offended you?”
At the end of the line, Sheila was furious. No wonder Athena took long in answering the phone. She should have

known it was because it wasn’t the right time to talk. “Give the phone back to ma’am,” she demanded, but Alpha Nick was unfazed.
“If you don’t answer my question, I will break every communication channel between you and my mother.”
He emphasized the word ‘mother‘ to exert his authority. Both Athena and Sheila were upset as Athena responded before Sheila could, “You can’t do that.”
She couldn’t hear Sheila’s words, but her son’s responses showed that the conversation was going south.
“Yes, I can. I will destroy her sim and get her a new one, or rather, I might just allow you to speak to her through my phone after destroying yours.”
Alpha Nick’s threat was directed at the woman at the end of the line. He knew how hurt she would be to not hear from Athena, taking advantage of it.
“Alpha Nick, what do you want from me?” Sheila asked in exasperation. Alpha Nick got serious and said to her,
“I asked you of my offense.”
“Alpha Nick, in case you have forgotten, we are divorced, and I don’t like friendship with exes,” Sheila said seriously over the phone. Even as her tone was not pleasant, he was glad to know that she was fine. Yet, the. mention of the plural form of an ex did not seem to settle well with him.
“Exes? How many are we talking about here?”
Sheila replied sadly, “Unfortunately, it’s just you.” She wished she had fallen in love with someb*dy else other than him, but that was not happening, though she ascertained that she no longer felt anything for him.
“Can you give the phone back to ma’am now?” she asked in annoyance. Alpha Nick was somehow relieved to have been the only man in her life. It felt like a champion trophy, brightening his mood.
However, he didn’t want to break the communication. It’s been a few days of his trying to get in touch with her to no avail. Hearing her voice now, it was so serene.
“Anita. She misses you.”
There was a brief silence at the end of the line. Sheila seemed to have been greatly hit by the news, but never was she going to reactivate communication with Alpha Nick.

“Tell her to speak to ma’am. She will know what to do.”

Alpha Nick was not pleased with her response, feeling like a failure. He tried another way. “Are you coming for the gala awards?”
“Nope. There is nothing there for me to do there anyway,” Sheila ensured to use the same words he said to her when she begged him to go to the gala awards with her.
Alpha Nick had changed a lot ever since Charlotte’s return, being less cold and rather warmer. Sheila even felt his warmth, but it was too late. Alpha Nick felt his rejection of her request from before caused her sudden. disinterest in it.
“Why did you want to go with me before?” he asked softly. Sheila was not polite in the least.
“Isn’t it obvious that I just wanted to show off that I was married to Alpha Nick? What are you thinking?”
Alpha Nick tasted bitterness in his mouth. Maybe she never laced his tone. “Thanks for being honest with me.”

“Anytime,” Sheila responded carelessly from the end of the line.
When Alpha Nick returned the phone to Athena, he wished to know what they were talking about as the woman kept giggling like a kid. He couldn’t help feeling jealous.
“I guess that was your ex,” Tom’s voice drew him out of his thoughts.
Alpha Nick smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry. I forgot you were still here. Let’s go and eat.” The door pushed open once more, Dustin stepped in. It seemed that Bree already had her meal and had retired to her room.
“Dustin, you must be hungry. Over here, let’s eat,” Alpha Nick invited him over. Dustin stared at Tom and smiled.
“Hi, Tom.”
“Dustin, how are you?” Tom asked. Dustin sat at the dining table and responded,
“Aside from still not finding my mate, I’m very fine.”
Tom frowned a little. He seemed to be the only one who didn’t care about the mate bond. “The best way to live freely is to forget the existence of the mate bond. I haven’t found my mate, but I don’t worry my head over it.”

Beta Dustin shook his head. For him, the mate bond was everything and one of the reasons why he was never in support of Alpha Nick and Sheila’s relationship, aside from the fact that Sheila was too smart.
“Unfortunately, I can’t be so open–minded about it like you.”
“Then you might die before you find your mate,” Tom said teasingly. The maids brought the food as Charlotte followed them, looking like she was going to die. Alpha Nick grew worried and asked,
“Charlotte, are you alright?”
