Before Eileen could respond, Eric ushered her into the car parked outside. Bending over, he secured her seatbelt, then walked around to the driver’s side and
got in.
Eileen cradled her milk, her head bowed low. “There’s no need,” she insisted, “to go to any hospital. I’ve been to every single one in the entire Hulbury. It’s useless. When you drugged me in the first place, you should have realized that acquired defects of the uterus simply cannot be cured.”
Eileen found it perplexing. Despite Eric’s history of treating her harshly, why was he
suddenly showing concern? She couldn’t shake the suspicion that he might have ulterior motives behind this display of care.
