However, he acted as if he saw nothing, sitting by the bus door with headphones on, legs crossed, engrossed in his phone, chatting with someone unknown.
Eileen recalled the words Paola had told her the other day. Even now, I still find it hard to believe that the person who risked his life to save me would be him!
It was pouring heavily at that time, with the sea waves churning violently. By the time she jumped into the sea, she had already lost consciousness. The school was just four stops away. The bus started and stopped intermittently, and before long, it was filled with people. Most of them were Blake-collar workers rushing to work.
Eileen noticed an elderly woman boarding the bus. The seats were already filled, but unexpectedly, Elm stood up, offering his seat to the old woman. Who would’ve thought he would do something like that? With a wickedly innocent smile on his face, anyone who didn’t know better would truly believe he was the model student at school.
Suddenly, Elm’s gaze pierced through the crowd and landed on her. His eyebrows raised slightly as if he had caught her doing something naughty, which made Eileen feel embarra*sed to look at him.
Eileen got off the bus when it arrived at the final stop.
Eileen slowed her pace. There really weren’t many who could arrive at Petalburg High School that early.
Across the street, one could hear the resonant recitation from the morning self-study session at Cloudburg Public School.
Suddenly, Eileen remembered something. The last time I left Cla*s One, Elm came over with his books, asking me for a tutoring session. I still remember what he said after I ruthlessly rejected him. Elm was right. I was really heartless. Before, his gaze toward me was only one of indifference. Now, in addition to indifference, his gaze seems to be criticizing me and accusing me of being heartless.
When Eileen saw him enter the school gate, she quickened her pace, wanting to catch up. What could have been easily resolved with a phone call became complicated. She didn’t have Elm’s contact number, and she had already left the previous cla*s group chat.
Inside the ladies’ changing room, Yvette reminded her, “What are you daydreaming about? Change your clothes!”
Eileen quickly gathered her wits, pulled out a tracksuit from the closet, and walked into the dressing room. Soon, she emerged in a Blake tracksuit.
During the physical education cla*s, the gym teacher simply had them run four laps to warm up before allowing them to engage in free activities. The academic pressure in Cla*s Six was immense, and they might only have one gym cla*s a month. Coincidentally, she happened to encounter it.
The boys from Cla*s One and Cla*s Three were playing basketball. Among them was Elm, who impressively scored a beautiful three-pointer in the game.
Eileen thought that the only thing the girls in Cla*s Six cared about was studying. Little did she know that quite a few of them were actually obsessed with good looks.
Most of the girls by the basketball court were there for Elm. In school, Elm was quite popular. In fact, he was known to have different girlfriends all the time.
Vera and Walsh stepped out of the equipment room and greeted Eileen. Yvette was indifferent to Vera. Sensing the atmosphere, Vera briefly chatted with Eileen before taking
her leave.
Yvette then said to Eileen, “Stay away from him in the future!”
“What did you say?” Eileen asked.
“Elm!”
Eileen asked in confusion, “What’s the matter? Has he offended you too?”
Yvette said, “He has offended my entire family. You don’t need to know the reason. Just remember what I’ve said.”
Eileen vaguely said, “We’ll see.”

Then Yvette changed the subject. “By the way, I almost forgot about something. How did get to know Jasper? He never talked to me, but he surprisingly spoke to me for the first time, and it was about you.”
Eileen kept mum.
Yvette, looking as if she was enjoying the show, nudged Eileen. “He also said, if he has time, he wants me to bring you out for a meal… Come on, spill it… Is there something going on between you and Jasper?”
Eileen grew slightly anxious. “You’ve misunderstood. He and I are just ordinary friends. You’re overthinking! At my age, my family doesn’t allow dating. They want me to focus on my studies.”
Yvette laughed and patted Eileen’s shoulder. “I must say that you’re quite something! Do you have any idea how popular my brother is in Hulbury? So many women are falling over themselves to get into his bed. Even those who hang out with me are hoping to get close to my brother through me. You’re the first one who wants to sever ties with my brother! But you know, you’re not exactly young anymore. I remember my mom was engaged to her first husband, Jasper’s biological father, when she was just sixteen. You do know that Jasper and I have the same mother but different fathers, right? They got married when they were eighteen. Back then, there were no marriage certificates or anything like that. It was all decided verbally, and once both families agreed, they were considered married. Things are different now… When my mom was at your age, she was already married. It’s high time for you too! But given how beautiful you are, there must be plenty of people pursuing you! Why don’t you tell me if you have someone you like? What’s your type? I promise I won’t tell anyone!”
As she spoke, Yvette even raised her finger to swear.
Yvette was definitely up to something. From the moment she began to speak, Eileen knew what was going on. Yvette is probing and testing the waters. Did Jasper ask her to inquire about these questions? Why would Jasper do something like this?
Although Yvette said so, Eileen could already tell from her eyes. The contemptuous, unappreciative look she gave Eileen was evident. However, because of Eric, she didn’t express it explicitly. Logically speaking, it was indeed she who had aimed too high by a*sociating with the Smith family.
Eileen answered softly, “I don’t have anyone I’m fond of. Right now, all I want to do is focus on my studies.”
Yvette looked into her sincere eyes and believed her.
Yvette was nowhere to be found after the physical education cla*s ended.
Eileen knew that Jasper had instructed Yvette to keep an eye on her. Now, my presence has
become a tool for Yvette to mend her relationship with Jasper.
Eileen headed to the cafeteria alone. On her way, she happened to run into Elm, who was walking with two others. He was holding a basketball in his hand. Gathering her courage, Eileen approached them.
Charlie looked at the person who suddenly appeared, feeling somewhat surprised, “What are you doing? Why are you blocking our way?”
Albert lowered his head and let out a soft chuckle.
Elm twirled the basketball in his hands, a mischievous smirk playing on his l*ps. “Can you speak? If you can, why are you keeping quiet?”
Eileen didn’t mind his annoyance towards her. She looked at Elm with a serious expression and said, “Regarding what you asked me… I agree.”
Albert and Charlie were speechless.
The ball in Elm’s hand sl*pped away unnoticed, rolling into a patch of gra*s on the side.
Eileen continued, “Apart from cla*s time, I only have free time during the evening self-study. I’ll wait for you at the library at half-past seven in the evening. I’ll only wait for you for half an hour. If you don’t show up… I’ll take it as a rejection. After that, I won’t wait for you.”
After saying that, Eileen turned around and left, heading towards the cafeteria.
