“She…” Jack lowered his eyes, unsure how to broach the subject with Mandy.
Recently, Mandy had been mentioning Charlotte more frequently. Even if she
didn’t bring her up, Jack could tell that Mandy’s admiration for Charlotte grew.

As she spoke, Mandy tried to sit up, but the sudden movement pulled at her

help like this?”
“But…” Mandy started to argue, but when she saw the stern look on Jack’s
face, she stopped short.
The corners of his eyes reddened slightly, and a swirl of complex emotions
welled up in his deep, his gaze as if he were trying to pull her in completely.
The panic from the phone call was still fresh in Jack’s mind. The moment he

thought of losing Mandy…

“You’ve done your best to save her. I believe if Miss Clinton were here, he
wouldn’t want you to do anything reckless either,” Jack embraced Mandy,
providing her with a comforting warmth.
