Mayra yawned and stowed her books away. “Andy, you should rest early too. I’m going to bed now.
Anderson removed his glasses and smiled at her. “Alright.”
His smile was enough to give her the chills. She darted back to her room with her bag. She checked her phone and realized that there was indeed a missed call from Gordon.
She instinctively called him back, but she hung up after two seconds. “I guess I shouldn’t disturb him at this hour.”
Feeling quite hungry, she treaded to the kitchen to scavenge for some food. She rummaged through the fridge stealthily. There was nothing to eat except a carrot. Left with no other choice, she washed the carrot and began nibbling on

A voice startled Mayra the moment she strode out of the kitchen.
“What are you eating?”
She shot a quick look at the stairs behind her. “I’m eating a carrot. Do you wanna have some?”
Anderson furrowed her brows. “You’re going to get a stomach ache for eating something this cold and hard at this hour. There’s supper in the pot. You can heat it up in the microwave.”
As he spoke, he walked up to her and threw her half–eaten carrot in the trash can. “Don’t eat this in the future.”
“It’s already good enough to have something to eat,” Mayra muttered under her breath, but he heard her perfectly.
The pot of seafood chowder was simmering. She heated it and brought it to the dining table. The portion was way too much for her, so she took two sets of cutlery.
She scooped a bowl for Anderson. “Have some, Andy.”
“What do you usually have for supper at Oakware Bay?”
Mayra’s shabby rental house was located there.
“I rarely have supper these days. The teacher gave us quite a number of assignments for the weekends, so I stayed up late today.”
“You’re not planning to move in and stay with me?”
Mayra’s spoon paused next to her lips. “I don’t think so. It’ll be an inconvenience if Isa moves in here in the future when you’re both married.
“Rest assured, Andy. I haven’t spent much of the money you gave me. I’ll take care of myself.”
“It’s not safe in Oakware Bay. I’m thinking of finding a new place for you so that you can live closer to me. Is that alright?”
Mayra fell silent for a while. “I don’t want to move. My place is near to school.” “Mayra-”
“Hurry up and eat, Andy. The chowder’s going to taste bad if it turns cold.”
She finished her fill quickly. “I’m done. Andy, I’m going to rest now.”
As if she was trying to escape from something, she placed the bowl in the kitchen before scurrying back to her room.
She closed her door and soon settled underneath her sheets after her bedtime routine. She texted Gordon, but he didn’t reply to her.
It was half past midnight, and Mayra’s surroundings seemed lavish in the photo. The vase on the bookshelf behind her screamed opulence. The soft light in the room enunciated the pristine glow of her skin.
The one who took this photo clearly intended to warn him to stay away from her. No matter what her identity might be, she wasn’t someone he could pursue.
He only knew Mayra’s brother was formidable.
